June Village Hall Report by Julian Wild

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

The recently enlarged and invigorated Village Hall Committee have had a busy old time of it over the past 3 months. Our twin tasks of organising and hosting events for the Village, and maintaining (and hopefully improving) the fabric of the building, have been much in evidence.

Food was the theme of the main event:

• On Sunday, February 19th a well-attended grand Pancake Breakfast took place, with Adam Clarke at the stove turning out an endless flow of cakes.

Friday, March 10th saw a massive outbreak of Sombreros, moustaches, chillies and cacti, as the Hall became "The Cantina" for a greatly enjoyed Mexican Night - complete with a musical soundtrack. Thanks to all who provided the food.

• On St. Georges Day, Sunday, 23rd April, a traditional English Roast Dinner was served up with meat and vegetarian options. This involved bookings and people did not hold back! Yet another well-attended gathering.

• Then came the Coronation weekend "picnic" on Monday, 8" May. There were fears that by Monday people might be coronationed out, and, with heavy rain meaning it could not be held outside, numbers might be low. We needn't have worried! Every seat was taken; the Village totally entered into the spirit of the event with the food table stacked with contributions. The Holly Water Stompers jazz band played a spirited set, and people stayed and shared till late into the afternoon.

Still to come - for your diaries: we look forward to seeing you there!

Friday 9th June. The ever popular Quiz Night with quizmaster Francis.

Saturday 15th July. Barbecue.

On the maintenance front, the playground area has been cleared, levelled, and resurfacing done where needed. With some new recycled tables and benches, the new shed in place (and the old one gone), things are really coming together.

The most noticeable new addition is the fabulous Poughill Village Hall sign on the front of the Hall; designed, painted, and fitted by Paul McCullough. A perfect addition to the refurbished and re-decorated Hall frontage.
